NDIA Weekly Q & A – 17 March 2017
The NDIS have launched a new ‘weekly Q & A’ news item which addresses common questions raised by participants in the Scheme. This is a great resource for consumers and staff to access quick and simple responses to questions about the Scheme.
Q. If I feel a support coordinator is not acting in my best interests, or is excluding me from some decisions, can I change coordinators?
- Yes, you can change your support coordinator at any time. Generally you will need to provide 28 days’ notice to your support coordinator. You may be able to negotiate a shorter period depending on your circumstances.
Q. Can counselling be a part of my NDIS plan? What about bathroom modifications?
- Because every person and their needs are unique, so are NDIS plans. We can provide you with some general information about what kinds of supports can be funded by a plan, but you should speak to a planner about your own specific needs. Q.Can I set up a MyGov account for a person with intellectual disability over whom I don’t have guardianship?
- It sounds like you might be a carer.Carer Gateway is a website with a lot of useful information for carers. The pages on financial support and healthcare, and power of attorney might be of particular use to you.
Q. How can I complain about a provider?
- Normally when you engage a provider, you (or your carer, for example) make a written Service Agreement with them, where you might have set out terms about how or when you can stop engaging their services. If this is the case, and you feel they are not meeting the other terms of the Service Agreement, you may want to refer to the termination provisions in the agreement including the notice provisions.

If you would like to make a complaint about a provider you can contact them directly or raise this issue with your State or Territory safeguarding systems.
People moving to the NDIS are protected through existing Commonwealth and State/Territory safeguarding systems, including access to state or territory-based processes for complaints.
A nationally consistent quality and safeguards framework has been developed and will protect people interacting with NDIS and explains what they can expect. The framework will begin when the NDIS is rolled out across Australia.
Q. Is there an NDIS mobile app where I can manage funds instead of using the MyGov website on my computer?
- No, there isn’t. However you might find it handy to save the NDIS myplace login page to your mobile phone home screen, so that it’s right there, easy to access.
On an iPhone:
- Open the myplace participant portal in the Safari app (myplace.ndis.gov.au). You will be taken to a mobile version of the myplace portal where you would enter your myGov username and password to log in.
- Before you log in, tap the ‘actions’ icon at the bottom of your screen (it looks like a square with an arrow coming out the top), and you will see on the bottom right of your screen an option that says ‘Add to Home Screen’.
- Tap on ‘Add to Home Screen’ (if you like, you can change the shortcut name from “myGov, Sign in” to “NDIS myplace portal”) and it will add an icon on your phone’s home screen that looks like an app.
- Your iPhone will automatically close your browser and show you where the icon has been saved. When you tap that icon, it will launch the participant portal login page in your mobile browser.
In mobile Chrome:
- Open the myplace participant portal in Chrome (myplace.ndis.gov.au). You will be taken to a mobile version of the myplace portal where you would enter your myGov username and password to log in.
- Before you log in, tap the ‘actions’ icon at the top right of your screen (it looks like three vertical dots) and you will see an option that says ‘Add to Home Screen’.
- Tap on ‘Add to Home Screen’ and it will add an icon to your phone’s home screen that looks like an app.
- Tapping on this icon will take you straight to the myplace login page in Chrome.
In native Android Internet Browser
- Open the myplace participant portal in the Internet app (myplace.ndis.gov.au). You will be taken to a mobile version of the myplace portal where you would enter your myGov username and password to log in.
- Before you log in, tap the ‘bookmarks’ icon in the bottom right corner. It looks like a ribbon with a star. Add the page to your bookmarks.
- Navigate to the bookmarks folder in your Internet browser by tapping the bookmarks icon in the bottom right corner, and tap on the myplace portal bookmark that you just created.
- Tap on the ‘actions’ icon in the top right corner (the three vertical dots) and select the option that says ‘add to home screen’. An icon that looks like an app will be added to your home screen.
- Tapping on this icon will open the myplace login page in your default browser.
